View Full Version : "Perfect" logon script language

afterthought
December 25, 2000, 01:44 am
I'm looking for a language that I can use for logon scripts. I like the idea of compiling something into an executable (logon.exe). I've heard Java is good and I've toyed with Perl. But I would like to hear some opinion(s) before I dive in and try and learn a new language.

Any ideas?

Boy, you wait till everyone heads off for a much deserved holiday and stick me with the hard questions! *lol*

Can't help you with languages; my forte is emoticons. Have a Merry Christmas afterthought (and I thought tweakthis was a long handle! You've got me beat by three letters!) I'm sure someone better skilled than I will answer your question once they've unstuffed themself from the turkey. Seasons Greetings. I hope Santa brings you your hearts desire.

Do you need this for the web (ex. something that can run from a browser) or do you need it for an application that would download and run on the hard drive?

I've got a love/hate relationship with DOS. I like it because most of the time it is easy to use. The 'net' commands are great! But when it comes to complex commands then try and integrate this with winNT AND win95, it stinks (I posted this problem on the DOS forum- http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/000016.html ). AND it's slow (at least my script is).

Anyway, I would like to learn something new that I could either integrate, replace, or enhance what I already have.

(The following is an interpretation of my afterthought:

If it is sexy or not doesnt matter, if it does what you need it to do and meets your requirements it does matter.

afterthough - Can I edit your post (or you can if you want to) to split your DOSDOSetc rant into 2 lines so there is no horizontal scroll bar. (I hate those things)

Just kidding about the "sexy" thing. I agree that as long as it's useful, it's worth using.

For simplicity, i really liked BASIC. I've just realized lately how easy it was. Line numbers should never have been ditched. Making loops, gotos, and if/then statements was so much easier in the good ol' days. http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

If you need a logon thru a web page, try VBscript. Its simple to use and it integrates easily with HTML. If that won't cut it, just compile an activeX control so you have a little more power. Basically its up to you, because i think what you are after can be achieved thru almost any language with the use of forms on web pages.

Do you have a link or reference that I could use?

There is so much I don't understand!

Are you after a logon script for accessing a web page or local intranet. Both of these use HTML. In HTML you can create text boxes for users to input data (in this case, user names and passwords). Is this what you want to do, let people access information thru their web browsers (either over the internet or over a local network). If so, i'll try to find a good web page w/ some info, if not, then i guess i don't understand what you are asking.

Sorry,

Although the info regarding web logons is helpful, my origional question was regarding workstation logons.

Recently, I found some info on Perl and how you can recompile Perl into C code or even an executable. I tried this, without much luck. I'm still looking into it.

Any additional posts would still be helpfull.

ok,

I've settled for using a combination of the Policy Editor (NTreskit, Office reskit, see also www.i386.com) (http://www.i386.com)) and batch files. This seems to be the best choice at this time.

Thanks for all the info!

I found a neat little utility that resolves many of my concerns posted here (what's left of them, at least).

<a href="http://www.computerhope.com/dutil.htm" target="_blank">http://www.computerhope.com/dutil.htm</a>
Look for bat2exe.com. It makes the source 'code' unreadable and speeds up the batch file.

I remember seeing this utility before. Many of you are probably already aware of it. Still, I figured it was worth posting.
