Despite an increased awareness of viruses and the need for protection, system administrators are still losing the war against viruses. ICSA Labs recently released results of its 6th Annual Computer Virus Prevalence Survey, partially sponsored by Panda Software. The results indicate that virus infection in a corporate environment has once again doubled over the last year. According to the survey, 80% of the respondents encountered viruses sent attached to an e-mail document.

The current prominent avenue for the spread of viruses is through executable files attached to e-mail documents. Despite the fact that system administrators have instituted company policy against employees opening .exe files, and stressed over and over to their employees the importance of deleting .exe files, employees nevertheless continue to open unauthorized files attached to e-mail documents. The result is the release of viruses such as \"I Love You\" and \"Melissa\" into the system and the network. A new product designed by Panda Software name Panda SecurityTM offers a solution to system administrators for the spread of viruses through executable files.

\"Panda Security was created to provide numerous security tools all under one umbrella and all built around a 448 bit encryption tool,\" said Patrick Hinojosa, VP and General Manager of Panda Software US. \"A focal point of the product is to allow system administrators to dictate activities of their users, as certain company policies such as opening .exe files are oftentimes not adhered to by employees, either knowingly or by accident.\"

With Panda Security, a system administrator can, among other things, block a user\'s ability to open executable files. Panda Security also allows a system administrator to block all access from unauthorized users, prohibit reconfiguration of the system, restrict the use of system resources and prevent information from being stolen, deleted by accident, or accessed. It also provides complete auditing on the actions taken and the users who carried them out. In other words, for example, the system administrator can know who attempted to open an .exe file in violation of company policy.

According to Armando Bernal, International Product Manager of Panda Security, \"This product, in addition to providing the most effective security, permits Windows 95/98 users to take full advantage of an open system without having to worry about the threats that normally hover over these systems. Panda Security provides a means of protection not previously available to combat the spread of viruses.\"
