Symantec Corp. a world leader in Internet security technology, today announced the upcoming availability of a new carrier-class anti-virus solution targeted at Internet providers. Symantec's CarrierScan Server 2.0 is scheduled to be available by the end of this calendar year for widespread deployment. This solution allows Internet companies to easily integrate Symantec's award-winning anti-virus protection into their existing Web-based applications. CarrierScan Server 2.0 is being engineered to meet the key requirements of Internet companies: scalability, availability, robustness and ease of integration.
CarrierScan Server 2.0 will feature a simple programming interface that allows Internet companies to couple anti-virus scanning with their existing Web applications. Using this feature, companies will be able to tightly integrate anti-virus scanning and repair capabilities into services such as Web-based e-mail, Web-based file sharing, Internet-available databases and other applications that deliver files over the Internet. CarrierScan Server 2.0 will also provide tracking and billing capabilities to help Internet providers charge their customers for anti-virus services.
"Internet providers recognize the value of protecting their customers from fast spreading computer viruses and other malicious programs," said Stephen Trilling, Director of Advanced Concepts for Symantec's Service Provider Solutions Division. "Symantec's CarrierScan Server is the only solution of its kind that makes it possible for providers to so easily integrate anti-virus protection into their Web-based services."
Many Internet companies process literally hundreds of millions of transactions per day and require extremely scalable solutions to handle such high levels of traffic. Symantec's CarrierScan Server 2.0 is being designed for deployment on one or more servers inside the Internet provider's infrastructure to handle virtually any load. As providers grow their businesses, they will be able to simply add additional CarrierScan Servers to their infrastructure and flip the "on" switch for complete anti-virus protection. The current version of CarrierScan Server has provided virus protection for Yahoo! Mail (http://mail.yahoo.com), one of the largest e-mail systems in the world, by detecting and repairing destructive viruses sent to Yahoo! Mail users.
The CarrierScan Server 2.0 is being developed to make use of all of the key anti-virus technologies available in Symantec's complete line of award-winning anti-virus products, including Bloodhound heuristics and NAVEX. Symantec's NAVEX is the first real-time extensible engine that delivers protection against completely new types of virus threats as part of normal virus definition updates. In addition, CarrierScan Server 2.0 will support SNMP and SMTP alerts, provide extensive logging, and automatically update itself with the latest virus definitions and engines without any interruption to service.
Availability
Symantec's CarrierScan Server 2.0 is scheduled to be available for Solaris (version 2.6 and greater), Windows NT and Windows 2000 by the end of the calendar year.
