View Full Version : 3 sticks of RAM
csqrd
February 24, 2001, 01:46 am
I just bought and installed 3 sticks of RAM. (3) K-Byte 16x64-PC100, 128MB, SDRAM, 168 Pin. My computer, when I booted and when I went into system under Contol Panel, show that I only have 254 MB of RAM. Shouldn't it show that I have 384MB?
Is there something insde on the MB that ables/disables the third memory slot?

Check your MB manual to be sure. http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Could be bad slot, bad ram, bios instruction needed. As reddsteel suggested, check your manual first.
To make sure the ram is good, remove ram from slot 2 and insert ram from slot 3. Not sure of how to test if slot 3 is bad. There may be a place in your bios that you need to enable to use slots 3/4 (if you have 4 slots). The manual should be able to help you with that.

Some older boards won't support more than 256 meg. (some will only support 96 meg) and some slots only suport 64 meg sticks so you realy need to check your documentation.
PS Unless your running Win Me or 2000 your os doesn't suport that much memory.

Can you tell us, what motherboard is installed in your computer?

The moterboard is a AB-BH6 with a PII-400 CPU. It's an Abit motherboard and we just updated the bios for another problem so we know we have the most up to date stuff there. I'm kind of wondering if one of the sticks are bad or if (as csqrd asked me about) it's the fact that while all three were Packaged and labled the same one of the sticks is phsically different in manufacture. csqrd would havve to give you the specifics as I'm at home again but two of the sticks had 8 chips and the last one had 16 (if I remember right).

I'm assuming you are running Win98 or ME.
You may want to check that you aren't unintentionally throttling back the ram.
start--->run---> type: msconfig
click advanced.
look at "limit ram to"
It shouldn't be checked. If it is, set the ram to 384 and uncheck it. click apply\ok, then reboot.
not much....good luck

You might try taking one stick out at a time start the computer and see what it posts at.
Also can you see what it says the ram amount is in the post up screen when you first start the computer?
