Dear Techies, I finally got a new (used) HD for my old P133.
The plan is to install it, format it, copy everything from the current HD (:C/), test
it for a few days and then remove the old HD back to the 486 Box that I borrowed it from.
The current one is a 695 MB Quantum, replacing a crapped out Western Digital (1.6 GB)
The new (used) one is a Samsung 2.16 GB... OS is Win 95 v4.00.950
If I stick it in the 2nd plug on the current HD ribbon will Win PnP automatically give it a drive letter (Win 95 is already on it... conflict?) and should it be Master, Slave, or Cable Select?
I know this is a bit sketchy, but I've got to start someware. Thanks, in anticipation, Jim.

You will probably have to set the jumpers on you hd. Set it to slave. Install it at the end of the ribbon cable.(Your master sits on the middle one). Then boot up go to your cmos and detect hardrive. To assign a letter it has to be formatted. I would do it this, go to dos prompt type in fdisk. Go to number 5 option and choose second hard drive.hit escape. Go to create dos partition(number 1 choice if I remember correctly). Then once in that menu choose create primary dos partition. It will assign a drive letter but you need to format it for windows to recognize it. Go to Dos again type , format d:. Your cd rom should become your E drive. Format and reboot into windows and your all set.

OK, The HD closest to the MoBo will be the Master (bootable) and the Slave wil be ready for storage (once cmos, fdisk & format).
Then I'll make a copy or C:/ to D:/, say . in DOS with "COPY C*.* D:" or somthing similar, or should I use Win/Run/SYST ???
Then I can switch the HDs in the box to make the new one Bootable and see if all is well enough to remove the small HD to it's 486 DX 2-66.
Seems simple enough, except the COPY part, and since I'm up at 5:00 am, and home after 6:00 pm, I'll save it untill the weekend. In my hour a night I'll keep gleaning info to get a solid mindset.
Thanks for the help, and any more you have to offer.

If you are going to make the new (used) one the boot drive, you could also just hook it up by itself as primary master, use a boot disk and format, then do a nice clean fresh install of your operating system. Once it's up and running, hook the old one up as a slave or secondary master and copy over what you want to save through Windows.
