I want to replace the motherboard, processor and case in my other computer in the most cost effective manner. I'm thinking about CDN $200.
Perhaps a k6-2+ 500 and a barebones mb that has space for 4 simms - gigabyte 5A ? and a generic 17" case without a power suppply.
Any thoughts? I'll be paying cash in Vancouver next week, if that affects pricing.
Cheers.

Thanks for posting - thing is that the memory, drives, sound and video in that old system are still fine. I've found places in Vancouver that still sell socket 7 boards for about $110 Canadian, so I thought I'd go that way. I'll have a look at the sites you posted and post back later.
One problem is that my wife is studying and I'm working so the machine and I are very separated (not to mention the wife - wtf am I doing worrying about a machine). I have one chance next week to fix up that old clunker while I'm visiting, so mail order is out.
Cheers

What kind of case do you have now? AT or ATX. You are going to have to match the form factor of the board to the case. Then the power supply to the board.JT.

I'm buying a new case anyway, and I've got the two kinds of power supply kicking about. After running through some sites the best I can come up with in Vancouver is a K6-2 500 ($72), Gigabyte 5AX ($108) and a no-name 17" case ($43). This is cheaper than ordering from the states because of the exchange and shipping.
Alternatives?

Here's a place in Vancouver you may want to check out. http://www.atic.ca/ I've haven't dealt with them yet so I don't know anything about the place. Nice prices though.

It's getting out of hand; I keep going round in circles. What started as a cute project is becoming a challenge. Dogg - I'm just about to where you started from. I'd rather have kept my simms; even in 2001 dollars 96 mb is expensive, but PC133 is so cheap ... I'd like to keep it around $200 but that seems impossible.
How about this, from the anik site (good link, pure luck) If you buy a slot A 750, they'll throw in a no-name MB (DFI K7) for $75 - total $225. Ram is $70 and a case is peanuts. About $325 in total.
Assuming that I've now decided to go with SDRAM, what would be the best bang for your buck in a cpu/mb combo for a system that is primarily used for word processing, kids games and music playback?

Thanks, but that's over $300 CDN untaxed or shipped and I'd still need ram and a case. I need a swell pal who lives just south of the border and likes to drive to BC. I got as far as the shipping portion of compgeeks and found out that they wouldn't ship to an address that wasn't on my credit card. Ah well, I'll be in the big city next week and trotting around to some stores - at least I now know that I can't upgrade as high as I'd like and still keep my simms. I might even have to buy an AGP video card - can't remember if that old board has onboard video.
Thanks for all your help folks.
