View Full Version : Modem problem?

I've just carried out a clean install of Windows ME on my computer (I got the Win 98 upgrade deal CD). I downloaded all the newest ME compliant drivers for my hardware that I could find. I also got new 2001 versions of NAV and NU. Everything seems to be working fine but....

I get occasional spontaneous reboots - only when I'm either online or connecting so this leads me to believe that it's probably down to the modem. This isn't just since I installed Win ME - I had the same problem over the last few months with my previous installation of Win 98 1st Edition. I was hoping that the fresh install and new OS would fix the problem but it hasn't http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

Twice yesterday, I dialled my ISP and had barely connected when the computer suddenly rebooted.
This morning I dialled up and the connection just froze so I rebooted through the Start menu. Then I got a BSOD with the error message
"An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0030D40 in VxD---. This was called from 0028:C002F285 in VxD---."
It gave me the option of carrying on so I pressed enter and it rebooted as instructed.

My modem is three and a half years old. It's a generic ISA 56K plug and play (v90 flashed)which I've tracked down to the manufacturer ASK.

I ran diagnostics and got this result:

Port Information: Com 3
Interrupt: 10
Address 3E8
UART: NS 16550AN
Highest speed: 115k Baud

The drivers for the modem are included on the Bitware software CD that came with it. Win ME refused to have anything to do with the modem after installation until I'd updated it with the drivers from this CD.

Hsa anyone any idea what could be causing this? It is really irritating and all the more so because I'm due to start an online OU computer course next month so I'd like to sort it out before then.

No - the modem is on IRQ 10 on its own and the mouse has IRQ 12 on its own.

The mouse is a Logitech Trackman Marble and is located on PS/2.

(I did realise that somehow Win ME had got Active Desktop set up (ugh!) because of the wallpaper I'd chosen for the desktop. So I disabled Active Desktop and reverted to the plain blue default background).

Perhaps that will help.....

In addition to just checking the IRQ's, also look at what Dogg pointed out: What COM port is your modem using? If it's the same one as your mouse is, then you'll likely have similar probs to the ones your experiencing, although I usually see the mouse affected first, with jumpy movement...

You MAY have to disable "auto IRQ settings" from the modem (in control panel).

In particular, watch that they are not on COMs 1 and 3, for they are actually the same, software wise..., try to make one COM1 and the other COM 2 or 4 (or 5, if available).

Hope this novel helps! Sorry to everyone about the length!

I already know which Com port the modem is using - it's Com 3.

But I can't work out which one the mouse is on - I've searched System tools, system, mouse etc and come up with a blank.

Is there some way of finding out which Com port the mouse is on?

I also realised that my beloved hubby had got his SpaceOrb plugged into Com 1 (where it doesn't work properly) so I tried it on Com 2 but the problems got worse. So I took it off and uninstalled in completely. The mouse is now behaving itself much better.

The modem disconnection problem remains but it only seems to happen now when the computer wakes from hibernation and I try to connect to the Internet. Perhaps the modem isn't being properly initialised after hibernation?

You could try disabling power management (ie, not having the computer sleep) and see if that is indeed the problem.

Thanks tweakthis,

I did explain a couple of posts back that it was a PS/2 mouse. I was under the impression that meant that it wasn't on a Com port as a serial mouse would be. (But I didn't feel up to contradicting Dogg of Demise and Bounced Reality Check on this point)

I'll try disabling the power management to prevent the computer from sleeping. I do prefer the computer to hibernate when I'm not using it and this modem initialisation failure (if that's what it is) is a real nuisance.

It's quite an old modem and, although I've flashed it to v90, I can't find any more up-to-date drivers for it than the 1998 ones I already have. Perhaps it's time to think about investing in a new modem.....

Thanks again,

Islander

Yes, that's true, but it doesn't do much to solve my spontaneous reboot problem http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

I've reported it to Microsoft but I don't know if anything will come of it.

I've disabled the hibernation option in my computer's power options.

Now I have an unattached Space Orb and I'm not sure which serial port to plug it into. I'm assuming that Com 1 will conflict with Com 3 where my modem lives. But it didn't seem to be any better when I put it on Com 2 - and I can't find anything on Com 2 already. I suppose it will just have to gather dust in the cupboard if I can't get it to work properly....

Check for Virus yet?

... my computer used to reboot on it's own all of the suden... checked, and I had Funlove Virus... It infects EVERY EXE file on your computer...and then when some of them are ran, it auto-reboots your system to further infect itself...

Islander, sorry--> wasn't thinking when I "reminded" you to check out the com port the mouse was using! http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

It's not a virus - I've got Norton Antivirus 2001 running (and regularly updated) and Zonealarm as well.

Dogg, yes, it's a nuisance having to plug the SpaceOrb into a serial port http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

But if the only Com Port occupied is Com 3, I should be able to get the SpaceOrb working on 2 or 4 shouldn't I?

Maybe the SpaceOrb drivers aren't compatible with Win ME?

I think I'll just have to experiment (and trust to Win ME Systen Restore to get me out of trouble if it all goes pear-shaped.....)

Dogg,

I used the Space Orb uninstall program to remove all traces of it from the system then I unplugged it from the serial port.

Yes, I thought that it would have thrown up problems on Com 1 which is why I switched it to Com 2 and installed it there instead. But it didn't seem to help much http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

I think I'll just have to keep on experimenting.... either that or get a serial to USB converter so I can plug the damn thing into one of the USB ports instead http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif
