i also play over on computing.net's (http://www.computing.net/) board. i recently ran into a problem that has me stumped. i though maybe you guys may have some ideas, so i asked this guy to post over here... he hasn't ever done it, so i will do it for him(now i want to know what's going on). this is the post in it's entirety:

Comment:
Everyday when I first turn on my computer it boots to a black screen with the cursor blinking like it is in Dos. When I restart it will start fine. It just started doing it and I haven't installed any software so I don't know what is going on. Everything works fine and I am completely happy with ME, and this is not a big deal, but I am wondering if anyone has had this experience or any ideas of what I can check.

have a look at this KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q261/7/66.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=Q261766&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WINME) and see if it pertains to you.

Thanks for the link. I tried doing what it suggested and it only made my computer crash. The interesting thing is that no matter how many times I start my computer during the day, it will start properly. It is only on the first start up of the day that I have this problem.

that is a little weird... so, i'm guessing it isn't software that's causing the problem, but hardware.
when you boot up in the morning, does the computer beep more than once?

The computer doesn't beep at all. Just after the ME screen, it goes black, then you expect to see your desktop, however it just stays black. I have all current drivers, bios, haven't added any software, or hardware so it seems to be a windows mystery, one of many. I can't find anything about this on the net so I was wondering if anyone else encountered this.
Actually, while writing this note, the thought accured to me that I had overclocked my video card a couple of weeks ago, and maybe when it is initially cold it won't work properly?
The card works fine all the time. Stealth III S540

hey jeff... try the same question on this board (http://www.helpfromtechs.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi) for me, will ya?
there a couple of hardware gurus over there that love a challenge...http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif actually, they're pretty good. see you there.
--------------------------------------------

now... i know it has something to do with the overclocking... is there some setting in his BIOS he should be looking at?

any input would be great... i guess it's only for my own curiosity at this point, but i will post any ideas you guys have over on the other board...

Thanks,
Heidi

I would underclock the vid card back to default and then start looking for the problem.

So would I, JT.

Are you sure the internal speaker is working. Maybe no beep codes for that reason?

I used to have a car that only stalled in the morning. Sat at work all day and started/worked perfectly. Maybe a cousin of this computer? Nah, couldn't be. The car would be 15 years old now. http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/grin.gif

thanks for the replies guys... i think Jeff disappeared on me, but i was curious.

another thing that piqued my interest(besides the fact that his computer doesn't make that pleasant little beep to tell him everything is ok), is the fact that following that KB article made his computer crash... basically it just tells you to do a clean boot using msconfig. why the h*ll would that make it crash?

oh well, i guess we'll never know.

thanks again guys.

Actually,I had to contact Gateway because of this problem. The tech told me the hibernate choice should be turned off in the shut down menu. I can not remember exactly how to do it, but the tech told me the hibernate is for laptops only! It will interfere with the desktop and initial bootup. Go to help and ask how to turn off hibernate. Ever since I disabled the hibernate choice, my computer has booted up just fine. I hope this helps.

i don't know if this helped anything... jeff disappeared. this is actually off of another guy's question about the same problem.

but if it fixed it... what an easy fix.
