Can I upgrade the CPU?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi.
I have an IBM Aptiva with a K6-2 380 MHz processor with the following specifications:
System board: V75M-UMA
System board chipset: SiS 5595
System board form factor: micro-ATX
For obvious reasons I want to replace the CPU with K6-2 550 MHz (i know, i know, it's like upgrading your old shoes instead of buying new ones, but to buy new shoes i'd have to buy a new system board and god knows (i certainly don't) what else i'd have to buy...a new computer perhaps, but i get so attached to things, i just can't let go
Well, I have the 'privilege' of using member-only IBM support discussion board. I used it to ask the support staff if the motherboard (or whatever else makes these things work) would support the new processor. I got an official IBM processor upgrade statement that can be summarized as follows: we are a huge corporation that doesn't want you to get away with a better computer cheap, we want you to buy a whole new shiny thing from IBM, therefore we will not answer you question. And they didn't.
If there are any experts on such antiquities as an AMD K6-2 CPU out there, would you please try answering my question.
Thanks.

who is the mobo Mfg? abit,soyo,intel... etc contact the mobo Mfg and find if it will accept it my uneducated guess is that it will. Your not junping up in the processor class (like a PII to a PIII) your just jumping up in Mhz from a 380 to a 550 should'nt be a problem. But as i said before you spend your hard earned cash check with the mobo Mfg

And of course even if the board will jumper up to that fast of a clock speed you may still hafta do a bios upgrade. So you'll need to know your bio's ver when you check out the MoBo's specs.

Oh, I can remember the time when you'd have to drag your ton-and-a-half TV to the local electronic butcher, and pray you'll carry out the same thing you brought in. My motherboard came with a manuel that listed jumper settings and listings of all supported processors. I'm wondering if you have yours still anywhere. Another option is to by another new motherboard to go with your new processor. i was looking at upgrading to a K6-and the motherboard was only 75$. Less than half the price of the processors.

Hi Bobo, -'
Interesting comment about the lovely treatment IBM gives us peons after we buy one of their machines.
I have an Aptiva E85 with the AMD k6-2-300 chip in it. I replaced it with an AMD k6-2-500 chip and the motherboard still tells me it's running the old -300 chip. Obviously, I need to move some jumpers but IBM refuses to give me the time of day.
I'll keep watching your querry for answers you might have offered to you as my problem appears to be nearly identical to yours.
If I don't get any good answers on what to do in the way of moving jumpers, I'll be cutting my IBM mother board up for key chain danglers and going to Fry's for an AMD Athlon Processor on a SOHO motherboard. They advertise one at a bit over $150. Guess it's a rather expensive lesson. IBM seems to be staffed by a bunch of Iddy Biddy Morons. Customer loyalty? Ha, fat chance!!
Good luck, - Earl

Someone else will have to give you the links as I don't go there but there are a couple of overclocking boards that some people here use that may be able to point you to an alternative site to get your jumper settings.
Anyone got a link handy?

Yes, you can try searching also, but if you ask around at the boards/sites I mentioned - they usually know a good deal about specific parts, etc. and can help you out.
