View Full Version : Sigh... another problem

For some reason my computer seems very slow lately. It opens new browsers and windows VERY slowly. It used to bang that stuff open instantly, but now it sits and waits while a new browser, for example, takes its sweeeet time opening. And i can't jump between browsers while it's doing it. I just finished Optimizing it (it was at 86%) and that didn't help.
Any ideas?
What is defragmenter and how does that work?
Btw, you guys do a great job on this site and i appreciate all your comments, suggestions, and help! http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Ah yep if you haven't defraged (I do it atleast once a month) It just gets slower and slower. Plus I like to reinstall windows at least once a year to get rid of all the croupted crap and keep things fast.

Run scandisk first and then defrag. You will need to disable any program that may start during this operation, like your screen saver and virus scanner.

I run defrag in safe mode because it's faster and you don't have to disable anti-virus, etc. I also have WinME defrag which is much faster and can be run on 9x systems. I can't find my link for the free download but can email you the file (it's only 209kb) if you post/send me your addy. Also, do you periodically delete your Temporary Internet Files - they can quickly build to the thousands!!!

Other temp files also add up very quickly. I use MoreSpace99 (http://www.contactplus.com/products/morspc/morespc.htm). It does a very good job of finding them all.

Tweakthis, i don't have WinME. And Norton deletes all those temp files. I do that regularly.
I ran the defrag last night and it seems to be a little faster today, but still not like it used to be. I'm thinking about re-installing Win98, but i'll wait to see if there are any other ideas first.
Thanks again! http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I have Win98 and WinME defrag works very well on that. Does Norton also delete all those unwanted cookies, too?

Their website is gone. I can put it up on my site for download. It's only about 30kb and works great. One click, and poof! No more cookies. http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
