View Full Version : Monitor Shortout takes Computer with it?

Ok I've finally calmed down enough to think. My monitor for my server system died. Near as I can tell the power supply in the monitor developed a short. Off I go to the store to spend money I don't have to spend to buy a switch and a bunch of cables to share the monitor, keyboard and track ball from my main system. But what do I find? Nothing, nothing at all. No video output from the computer at all. Ok, I switch out the video card with a spare I had available , still dead. I have a couple of extra sticks of ram, no luck with them either. (Don't know why they woudmake a difference but thought I'd try) So now unless someone else can come up with another suggestion for me I'm down to figuring that the short in the monitor took out the motherboard too. I'm open to suggestions.

Other tidbits ar I can still hear the HD's powering up, but the computer never checks the A Drive at all. the computer itself makes no other sounds other that the HD's poweering up and the Fans for the power supply and the CPU coming on. No beeps, no fuss, and with no video output no error messages.

Sometimes, no matter what you do, the Dragon wins.

Oh, dear, shadowhawke. Doesn't sound good at all!!! Is there any chance that when you removed the old ram you knocked loose one of the power cables that attaches to the mb? I don't know what they are called but (don't you dare laugh!) they're the white ones that plug into the motherboard and you keep the black/black side by side! (Damn you, I said don't laugh!) I had that happen once and darned if I could figure out the problem, my brother gave them a little wiggle and son-of-a-gun worked!

You need a beep or series of beeps from the mobo. No beep is a signal the the mobo is not working. I had a machine with no beeps and decided to keep playing with it by reseting it. Finally I got a beep but no video, then I got the post screen but win would not load. I swapped ide cables and put everything on the secondary ide channel and the machine is still working. I don`t trust it but it works.JT.

I wasn`t going to laugh, tweakster, but you made me.
