View Full Version : windows98 not booting fully...need more power?

Here's what my 'puter does. The pretty Windows 98 opening screen (the flag, the clouds) just stays open, no hard drive spinning or anything. My system: AMD K2 350 with a 1.1G and a 6.5 Gig hard drive, sound blaster live card, a good video card, and a video capture card.
It's been suggested from someone here at work that I may need to boost the power. I just added the video capture card this weekend. The video capture card doesn't work; when I hit a "capture video" button on video editing software program, the computer shuts OFF and reboots.
I appreciate any help!

What size power supply do you have? If it is a 145 watt it may be possible. Pop the cover and take a look see. Remove the video capture card and see if you still have problems.JT.

I've been discussing the matter with our company's IT guy. He thinks that I just may have tapped my system's limit, plain and simple. I could try using Windows ME, but he says to just get a separate unit for doing my video editing. Thankfully, the wife has an unused computer in the house that I could use...

If you hit the escape key when the "clouds" first appear, can you tell what programs are running in the background? Maybe it's hanging on trying to load an application or piece of hardware? My first guess would be it's hanging on trying to load the CD-ROM. How much ram do you have? Have you tried re-installing the operating system? Maybe a bad install? Did you add any new programmes before the problems started? Did it ever work properly? Which hd has the operating system? Did you try disengaging the second hd? Can you boot into safe mode with no problems?
Just some thoughts. I think a little more info is necessary or I could keep asking questions if you prefer. http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

What happens when you try to get into safe mode?
I had the same thing happen here... it was due to the fact that a device had gone bad... so the computer was flarghing when it tried to boot with it attached. Once I disconnected it... I could boot fine... but I had to disable some devices through safe mode/device manager in order to figure out which device it was hanging on.
So... just wondering if you can get into safe mode? If you can, we can troubleshoot from there.

The machine tried to go into safe mode, but no keyboard inputs were accepted! Like, the keyboard was disconnected or something. But I see what you're saying...disable some devices in Safe and see if the addition of a device hangs it.

I will try hitting escape when the pretty clouds show up to see if its a program that's buggin'.
I have 128 megs of Ram, and the problem just started out of the blue, but I do blame it on my video capture card. I just might disconnect it and put it into an older standby computer and do my video editing there and use this newer, badder computer as my serious game playin' machine!
Thanks, I'll be back...don't have too much time to troubleshoot during the work week, unfort.

Are you using a USB keyboard? USB hates DOS and Safemode... if you have a regular PS/2 keyboard around, try that one.

Hey, newgrl, nice to see you down in hardware land. Am I spending too much time in Win98? I know it can't be the networking forum! http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

Hey, kids, you know what? Keyboard and mouse cords may look and feel the same, but if you put a keyboard cord into the mouse port and vice versa, very funny things happen to your system!
I think that's why they put a little keyboard picture on the stem of the keyboard plug-in so us IDIOTS don't mix up the two!
Sorry I wasted everyone's time!!

No big deal gotovegasboy, I just almost did the same thing today. Took me all of this time to catch your handle. Thought it had something to do with a gas boy http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/confused.gif.JT.

My wife would say that gasboy is appropriate.
So, now, yes, back to the REAL issue...namely, when I initiate the video capture card, my system just shuts down and reboots! I've heard that I've got too much on the system, and should put it on another system. I've gone through the Device Manager tab on My Computer and no conflicts show up as far as devices and IRQ's go.
Anyway, I'm willing to do just that if no one has any other ideas...
THanks!
