I recently acquired (free) a DELL 133 MHz system, with 16 RAM.....very Slow Bla Bla bla,(i will upgrade to 64Max),and went to the Intel.org site to find that they no longer manufacture the Pentium, and Pentium Pro processors! (old old old....)It is trash time? If I could afford a new one, I would. Is there any chance I may find a 200 MHz anywhere? (Is Avnet,or Ingram-Micro) good processors? Thanks, jim

Before you think about upgrading the CPU, you should check the motherboard specs and find out if it can handle a faster processor. Some will only go as high as 166. As for purchasing a used cpu, I think you'd have to check around used computer stores, you might be able to pick one up fairly cheap. You might try contacting some local computer clubs to see if they have swap/sell nights.

imho, I don't think you'd notice a great deal of improvement in speed with just processor. You need to increase the ram. If you're lucky you might be able to go to a max of 128 megs (it's a guess, though).

I don't know enough about photdeluxe 4.0 or photoshop to know the minimum requirements ... check out the website(s). Remember, though, that minimum requirements are just that ... even if you meet minimum it's likely to be quite slow.

Good luck. I think you'll have a decent machine for basic internet/email, wordprocessing and lightweight (read 'older') games. Most of all, have fun with the upgrade...imho, it's satisfying to do it yourself.

BTW - if you've not spent much time inside the computer, here a link (http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/tutorials) to HWC's Tutorials.

Definitely do the RAM upgrade first, A P200 (or 300MHz AMD if your board does the voltage thing) will also suck with just 16M RAM . If you want to go beyond 64M, make sure your chipset supports it...look up the chipset, don't go by what the motherboard homepage says. You will have a 430 chipset on there. The excact chipset is 2 more letters like LX, FX, HX, VX, TX and so on. most of them cannot handle more than 64M RAM despite what a motherboard manual says...

I don't know about Photoshop on a 133, but I can tell you it goes okay on a 200MMX with 64. some filtering is processed kinda slowly but other things are okay considering..

If I'm motivated, I might try it on a 133 tonight. I'm rebuilding it so I might take a few minutes to throw PShop5 on there just to see.
