Passwords, anyone?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The scenario: Okay, so I come home from work today and notice my stash of blank cdr's is kinda low. Gee, that's funny. Turns out my loser brother thinks it's okay to use my cd's, my cd burner, not to mention my computer and cable connection to download songs and in turn, burn cd's for himself and his scummy friends. (oh, and all the above is bought and paid for by me, it is not a family thing) Did he ask? No! Did he leave a few bucks to replace the cd's in question? No!
So, what I want to do is put a nice little password on bootup to keep the kid out. I don't know if it's possible, but an added bonus would be if I could customize the message that goes in the password box. Like say, "No Napster for you today, moron", or something equally demeaning. Sorry for the rant, but man I am so ticked!

There are many password programs out there to buy or download. If he's slick with computers he will get by all of them anyway.

What I would do is setup a BIOS password. Go into your computer's BIOS when booting, and look for an option for a password. This will prompt him for the password before it even boots up, so there aren't alot of ways to get around it. (But it CAN be done ) . You cannot make a personalized message however, but this may be your best bet.

There is one option that should work but it is a bit pricey. Get Windows 2000, make a dual boot system, and install your CDR software only in the windows 2000 portion. The only way into win 2000 is with a password. (Course even easier, get a lcking box to put your blanks into.)

What manunkind said is correct but depending on what type of MS you have (if you even have MS) is to use Win2K, it is so much better than Win95/98/ME

Hey thanks guys! I've calmed down today and thought things out like a rational human being. I think I'll do the bios password for now, but I have been looking at win2K anyways (using 98 now). That should keep the little dirtbag out of my computer, if not, violence may be my only option.

If you discover he is still getting around your password protection, try removing the poser cord. Provided you do not have any spares lying around the house, that should get the point accross.

You could always smack him around a couple of times, knock some sense into him. But violence is never the answer.

I'm sorry, you're right. Violence is not the answer. In this case, blackmail is probably the best way to go. That way, I get my computer to myself, a little extra cash, and the satisfaction of knowing I can destroy someone's life with just a phone call.

oops - damn typos - poser = power cord.

mind you removing power cord can also be the first step towards the latter suggestions, nothing like a good weapon!

I still like the Win 2000 solution not too many ways around that one. Course you gotta hide your CDR software or he can just install that onto 98 on his own. Like the bleack mail idea nothing like a little payback.
