View Full Version : Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament 2003 (or Unreal 2K3 if you want to be trendy)is released on June 18th.
This is totally different from Unreal 2 which is also released soon.
How?
*There won't be a reappearance of assault mode in
UT 2003 as Unreal 2 coming soon, which is entirely assault mode, allegedly as
"other games, like Medal of Honor, just do it better. Besides,we found that with Unreal Tournament, very few games online were with assault mode."
*Info taken from this <a href="http://www.gamesdomain.co.uk/gdreview/zones/previews/apr01/unreal_tourn_2003.html" target="_blank">site</a> (for a review and screenshots).
Or have a look at <a href="http://www.barrysworld.com/content/reviews.asp?Article=176&Page=1" target="_blank">BarrysWorld</a> for more of the same.
Get playing when it comes out Jeff :)

Seems to be the hot ticket item...there are movies out as showing the gameplay at conventions in Europe.
I'm in two diff clans playing UT online and I have noticed several of the players temporarily retiring until the new version comes out.
There are several questions about the new version regarding mods and cheaters. We have had a rash of cheaters lately.
The big mod is ZP or Zero-Ping..it is what I play and compete in...in a nutshell it levels the playing field for peeps on dialups and those on high speed connections...it does work well.
NLA*Spaz-UT ZP IG CTF Clan
-)AO(-*Spaz-UT ZP IG LG135 Clan (also NonZP)
Between the 2 there are about 10 servers..if anyone is interested in additional info just post here :)

Hi Bazz,
good to see you again. Here's what Games Domain report about cheating:
"Epic has been particularly hot on preventing online cheating, which is vital if you wish your game to be taken seriously for competitions. They have even gone to the extent of hiring Dr. Sin, the founder of the anti-cheat project CSHP (client-side hack protection). "Yeah, Joe to us," laughed Wilbur. "I can tell you that Dr. Sin has been on the payroll working for the last six to eight months at the source level - with the client-side stuff, he didn't have source-level access. Now he is right into the guts of the code, and that's been his job, so if it's possible, we'll take every measure."
"But you have to remember," Wilbur continued, "there's a balance that has to be struck, because we provide a giant doorway into the game with mods and mutators, so the ultimate way to keep people from any cheating whatsoever would be to provide a closed game - absolutely no mods, no mutator access, all the editing tools, you don't get 'em. But you know, that sucks." Players can certainly expect a CD-key for online play, which should protect them in terms of online warez play".

update from Mark Rein ,the PR dude for ut2k3.
"Hi Folks,
Here's an update on the status of UT2003.
Performance optimizations are really coming under control nicely. When we originally announced UT2003 we were pretty sure that hardware T&L and 32-bit rendering would be must-have features just to get the game running. It turns out we might have been a little too conservative with this specification
Resident graphics wiz, Andrew Scheidecker, has cranked up graphics performance very nicely and hardware guru Daniel Vogel has somehow managed to get 16 bit working quite well and make the game run on low-end cards like TNT2 and even 3DFX's famous Voodoo3!
So there it is, Voodoo3 and Voodoo5 will work with our game. Here's the disclaimer: the company that made these boards is no longer in business so these boards won't be "officially supported". The Voodoo3 drivers we tested with were 3rd party drivers from voodoofiles.com. Dan thinks the Voodoo5 drivers he tested with were the ones provided with Windows 2000, the OS on his test machine. We can't guarantee everyone who has a Voodoo3/5 card is going to be able to get the game working nor can we guarantee that the game is going to run well on their system. On our test box, an Athlon 1Ghz we ran the game consistently on Voodoo3 around the low to mid 20's (frames per second) at 512x384 and 640x480 both, of course, in 16 bit color. Visual quality was decent, not perfect as there are some visual flaws, but good none the less. The Voodoo5 was able to achieve the same kind of performance but at 640x480 with 32 bit color and the visual quality was actually quite good. A TNT2 achieves about the same performance but at a lower resolution - for TNT we're running 320x240 at 16 bit color - the absolute lowest end of the scale. Even at these resolutions the game is still a LOT of fun to play.
These performance numbers are averages seen while actually playing the game. The bottom line is that people with these kinds of video cards are going to be able to see why this game is so special, they're going to have fun playing it and they'll see how upgrading their systems will get them a better presentation.
On the sound side we have some amazing news! Dolby Laboratories informed us today that we are officially Dolby Digital 5.1 certified! UT2003 will be one of the first PC games to ship with true Dolby Digital support. Of course this requires hardware that has DD5.1 which today includes any Nvidia nForce motherboards but more hardware is on the way. Dolby is just as excited about this as we are, the report we got back said UT2003 had "perfect 5 channel panning!". Of course on add-in cards like Creative Labs' Sound Blaster Audigy we'll also deliver an awesome 5.1 performance so you don't have to have Dolby Digital to have 5.1 sound.
Network performance is improved from the original UT. Bandwidth usage has been decreased which should help particularly for people playing over modems. We've also focused on optimizing server CPU utilization. AI and gamecode is undergoing a lot of tweaking and improvement. In this area the last 10% is the difference between a good game and a great game and, I said in a previous update, UT2003 is going to be a great game.
In terms of releasing the demo we're still over a week away, maybe over two weeks away but we are making very good progress and the game is coming together really nicely."
sweet ......2-3 weeks until demo ... well he has said were about 2 weeks away from relasing the demo before and it has been a month.

update from mark rein again.now is the PR guy wif this bad @ PR or what>????
"As for release dates the only release date is "when it's done". We still have not completed the demo. For UT2003 we plan to do exactly what we did with UT - release the demo, gather feedback and bug reports, fix the bugs, assess the feedback, modify the game, and then possibly release another version of the demo to repeat the process - all of this BEFORE the game goes final. I don't see any way for all that to happen, and to get the game in a box and in stores, in time for the date you said. So this is yet another fictional date that should be treated as such. "
the forums ova there have turned into a nightmare,if anyone is to register i wouldn't post anything at all lol.
but the mob has turned on Mr Rein becuase of his "yep demo in 2 weeks"(2weeks lata), yep demo is still another 2 weeks away.and so on and so fourth ...ever since the middle of May he has said this.
estimate guess of realse now is mid september...but who knows.
i really doesnt matter to me how long i wait as i dont have a braodband connection and mostlilly will be playing against Bots lol.

another update lol
another "2 weeks away statement ,hmmmm how many times has he said 2 weeks away it has to be up to about 6or 7 now lol.
Folks.
Sorry for not being around much lately with updates. I'm working on a whole bunch of things that need to be done before UT2003 (the full version, not the demo) can go out the door including, but not limited to:
1. Trying to close some deals that will hold special interest to UT2003 mod makers. Once these are done there will be some cool announcements.
2. Working closely with video card companies who are coming out with awesome new products this fall and want to use UT2003 to show them off.
3. Creating and approving a bunch of marketing / promo / box artwork / logos for all three games (UT2003, UC and U2).
4. Concluding a bunch of separate UT2003-related legal agreements for things like; the sound library we're using, the end user license agreements for demo & full game, and clearances for various logos that have to go on the box.
That is all in addition to my normal Epic management duties. These things all take precedence over marketing and PR because I don't want to be the bottleneck that delays the release of the game.
Digital Extreme and Epic have decided to each take responsibility for one of the two games we've been working on together. Having one team work on each game in one location should help them both get done sooner and be more differentiated. Epic will finish UT2003 while Digital Extremes will concentrate solely on Unreal Championship for Xbox. DE will be specifically working on the unique features and content going into Unreal Championship while we put the finishing touches on UT2003.
There has been a huge amount of polish work done to the game since my last update especially in the area of AI where Steve Polge has made AI that is vastly improved over that in UT. Infogrames is shipping a bunch of testers here next week to help us shake out the game a little harder.
In my estimation we're still more than two weeks away from shipping the demo. I know this might be disappointing to many of you eagerly waiting for the demo but as soon as we think we're 5-7 days away I'll let you know. I thought we'd be done with the demo by now but I underestimated. My apologies for that.

an update , lol are we ever going to see this game let alone the demo??
cliffy b
"Well, let's see...
The objective for us has been to make sure the game feels DONE before we release the demo. That way, we're not fixing things from the demo that we do not already know about.
Botmatches are being tested quite a bit. We want to make sure the AI is challenging without being frustrating.
Ragdoll is being tested everywhere. Must make sure everything has low poly Karma collision assigned to it.
Maps are being set up to run well on lower end cards. We have a HIGHDETAIL flag we set on actors that are out of view (meshes outside of play, extra particle FX, etc...) and going through all the maps to do this takes time.
Menus are being polished and tweaked. Server browser included.
We just found that a few of the player meshes had their collision cylinders set incorrectly, so headshots were hard to get on these guys (being fixed...)
Redeemer is IN and working. Effect is being tweaked and adjusted.
All weapons are being given "Switch to" sounds.
Bombing run works really well. Debating whether or not some of the goals should require a double jump to get to or not...
James Golding (physics guy) is working his butt off to make sure the Bulldog (vehicle) is in and working properly in network play. (mostly for mod users)
Chad Schoonover is working on taunt animations are being put in for each of the characters. The pelvic thrust shall return!
Final taunts are being put in and localization is being worked on.
There ya go. Hope that helps. "
well we were expecting the demo out in May i think it was , and mark rein said we are still about 2 weeks away ,man what a great guess ......... lets just hope there doing sumthing very very very good with all the time there taking :).

yet another update from good 'ol Cliffy B
"Not much longer folks.
Menus have been reworked and are being ironed out.
Server browser is almost finished.
We're focusing on testing the maps that are shipping with the demo.
4 maps will be in the demo: (forgive me if this has been posted before)
ANTALUS - DM map in an exterior setting. Beautiful grass, rolling hills, neat rock structures around, etc...
ASBESTOS- DM map in a factory style setting.
CITADEL - CTF map - Like Face, but with multiple paths.
ANUBIS - Bombing Run map - tons of fun.
Level Designers are reviewing the AI in their maps to make sure that the bots know how to Shieldgun jump, Translocate, Double Jump, and Low Grav jump to EVERY available spot in their maps.
The single player campaign is being tested and finalized.
The Redeemer is in and fully functional and is very close to being bug free.
All levels are being finalized for ragdoll (low poly) collision.
Extras are being put in. Select a mesh for your player avatar and the voice is now hooked up to announce it. Kill someone with a redeemer and their body goes flying. Sound matches up with the redeemer explosion properly. Mutators are being tested in random combinations with each other. Instagib with zoom and translocator and QUAD jump is quite a kick!
One thing that I'm excited about with the new UT - all of the gametypes will be very fun and viable online. Assault and the original Domination, as much as I love them, had some issues that prevented them from reaching their full potential online. Dom 2.0 and Bombing Run are right up there with CTF and other gametypes!
Hang in there guys!
Cliff"
