I've been trying to play the original Privateer on a new computer with windows XP. I install it successfully, but when I try to run the program, i get the following error message in the DOS window.
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica">code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;"> protected driver is not responding to EMS function calls. Make sure your EMS driver is not configured with the NOEMS option. If it is, replace the option &quot;NOEMS&quot; with &quot;RAM&quot;</pre><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica">What am I supposed to do?

If the game is DOS based, and you are running XP as your OS, it might not run at all. Some DOS based games will not work on XP OS.

I couldn't get it working in W2000 so I doubt XP will be any better.

Are you using a bootdisk to run it?
The NOEMS line is either in config.sys or autoexec.bat (can't remember which) on the bootdisk or the custom .pif files (check properties of the shortcut to the game).

I've been trying to get it to work to, with no success.
I think ill just install DOS and try to run it from there...

The problem is that XP doesn't run off DOS like the previous Win 9x,
so you cant use a boot disk. You can edit the DOS emulator settings,
but they are worthless. I've tried everything, and I can't get this
game to run. I've even copied the old emm386 driver from an older
computer, but that didn't work either, because the EMS is guarded
by some evil WinXP device. Some one has to figure this out!
