Recommended additions:

Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/products/za/index.html) is an industrial-strength Firewall that protects personal computers from even the most determined hacker, blocking all known methods of attack.

ZDNet's How to Install, Setup and Protect your PC with ZoneAlarm (http://www.zdnet.com/zdhelp/stories/main/0,5594,2610364,00.html) instructions.

Computer Associates' InoculateIT (http://www3.ca.com/Solutions/ProductFamily.asp?ID=128) provides superior protection against today’s most prevalent security threat -- viruses.

Another recommended addition:
Startup Cop (http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/18/08/ut1808.001.html) from Ziff-Davis and PC Magazine.
Manage all your Windows start-up programs. Works with all Windows 9x, NT 4.0, Windows 2000. A must have app for anyone running Windows 2000. Only 528kb download. Best one I've found for Windows 2000. Let's you temporarily disable selected programs from running at start-up or pack them for complete removal. Also lets you save different profiles of what you want to run at start up. Great utility and simple to use.

Another great freeware is PowerArchiver (http://www.powerarchiver.com/).

It used to be known as EasyZip 2000 but has been through a major code lift. I don't know if it has every feature that the commercial archivers do because I don't use them but it is able to do everything that I have ever needed to do with a zipped/archived file.

I traded in EndItAll for TrayKiller. EndItAll just terminates all your running programs but Traykiller will toggle them back on after you are through burning or installing: http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~reichler/TrayKiller/index.html The beta works fine but there is a non-beta for the purists.

PrintKey 2000 is now shareware but the freeware version is still available. Excellent screen capture: http://newlife-win98.server101.com/printkey_info.htm

RunIt is another freeware gone bad but you can still get the freeware. Right click on the top of the screen in any window and a dropdown menu appears. Put anything you want on the menu. http://www.onlythebestfreeware.f2s.com/runit.htm I’ve used the beta for over a year with no problem and it is more feature rich: http://www.magister-lex.at/RUNit/

Here's my actives.

TweakUI
WinZip
XDrive-Back up storage
Innoculate
HotMail-Scans for incoming virus
Add Remove Pro
ME Defrag
Reg Clean
Ad Aware
Zone Alarm

These are what I've kept out of what I've tried. For example this Compaq 5360 came with McAfee installed, I renewed one time but since it caused my computer to quit so much, it was dumped for Innoculate. Using Hotmail instead of Outlook Express to help in my virus defense. I use XDrive and floppies for back up. Don't have the funds for tape yet. Add Remove Pro is easy to use. The rest are self explanatory. Notice ya'all use a lot of the same ones so I guess I'm on the right track.

Hi All. I find "Convert" very usefull.
http://www.joshmadison.com/software/convert (http://www.joshmadison.com/software/) n.b. Click on the word Convert for an eg.

At 145 KB it resides as an icon in my Start/Programs menu where it gets more use than the calculator.

Well, as queen of endless links:

Bookmark Wizard has got to be my fav.

Bookmark Wizard is a little program with a simple wizard-like interface that generates an HTML page with all/selected links from your Internet Favorites folder. The links in the resulting page are grouped and sorted in ascending order like they are in your Favorites folder. You can specify colors for links and backgrounds, title, caption, etc., for your page. Also, you can exclude certain folders from being listed. Advanced users are able to edit the entire page template to fully customize it. The resulting web page can be used as a links page on your homepage; you can send it to a friend or use it just as a startup page for your web browser etc.

A few notes about things noticed.

Belarc, is as advertised free, however it will not work with IE6 BETA. It will work with the released version whenever, according to the website.

Some of the programs are not really free. The link for WordWeb took me to a page for Word Web Pro for $18. I used the original word web, and without the things available in Pro, it is not that good a program. With the free version you had to be able to spell the word to find it. The pro version, I believe will search phonetically.

A truly freeware archive/zip utility called PowerArchiver 2000. (http://www.powerarchiver.com/) does everything that WinZip does and no nag screens.
*EDIT*
Whoops!! It seems that with the latest version it has become shareware. Can't blame a company for trying to make a buck.

Got too many links in Quick Launch?
Hidden Menu (http://ideasoft.heha.net/) is the perfect answer to your need to launch programs. When Hidden Menu is not in use it is invisible, saving your valuable desktop space. When you move your mouse to the bottom right of your screen, it pops up, allowing you to launch your programs, files and shortcuts. You can place different Menus around your screen so that when you move your mouse to the right hand side, you have one menu and the left side will house another.(New version allows you to launch your program by hotkey)

2 handy little apps for passwords

- WASP to work with the windows PWL file

- 123 password recovery (used to be 007, little spy guy icon), decodes those pesky **** that are saved long after you forget what password you chose

i use the older versions, assume (don't hold me to it!!) the newer versions have been improved

ratings:
wasp version didn't seem to capture all the passwords, those it did were fine, a c+

007 / 123 password recovery is simple to use (start program, drag icon over password field, see password), saves the bacon every time, an A
