what software would you buy!
I have $1000 to spend on computers, but it must be spent on software. I have most everything I want in the word processing/graphics end, and as much as I might consider on-line courses like the MSCE stuff, I don't have the time right now to do them justice. So what's left?
Other operating systems, music software, video software (but no hardware - captue card) ... what else?
If you had a grand what would you buy?

I would buy a lot of graphic software as that is what I am into right now.
* Photoshop6
* Acrobat5
* Dreamweaver4
* Fireworks4
* Flash5
* Swish1.5
* DreamweaverUltraDev4
I think this might total over $1000 though. http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/grin.gif

If my components were compatible, I would buy Windows2000 Pro. Then decide what to do with the rest.

Thanks for the input.
I guess I'm spoiled - I have win2000 pro at work, use NT 4 and win2K on the servers and have access to dreamweaver, fireworks and photoshop from our tech.
It's hard to spend money when you have a deadline but you don't know what you want.
Keep those suggestions coming.

You could buy me some software! *lol* So, what type of computer interests do you have? Want to web design? In to networking? Need to learn linux? Do games count? More info would help determine answers.
You know, all I can think of is hardware. Guess that shows where my interests are. Hmmm, lusting after many a piece of hardware but no software. Sorry, no real contribution here. Going back to General Discussion where I belong! *lol* http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/wink.gif http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/lol.gif http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/lol.gif http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/confused/az.gif

Interests? ... tweaking, of course. If only I could buy hardware all would be simple.
Perhaps I could explain a bit here. I have over $1000 in my personal pro-d fund. It can't be spent on hardware, but software, apparently, is considered professionally developing. Normally I would take a course off-island - check your virtual atlases, gang - and this would easily consume the fund. The flight alone is $620. However, I plan on leaving my present employer on July 1st, and rather than leave (and lose) this money I thought I'd find an alternate avenue. Which brings us to ... interests.
Digital recording software - I have the PG PowerTracks pro Audio studio already (which I highly recommend - Canadian, good, and inexpensive). There is Q-Base and Cakewalk I guess. And things like raygun in case I wanted to digitize my entire record collection.
Games ... I play D11 and my son plays Humongous products. They are only $50 a pop anyway.
Web Design? I was going to make a web page to display and sell my house (ex-church, in case you're interested)so I got heaps of software from my tech. Never did make that site though.
Networking? Yah. I did the lab, in NT and win2k. All the software was courtesy of the District, so there was no financial pain for me. Does it make sense to own networking software for home use, given that I have copies anyway, and yet have no hub, cabling or NICs? Perhaps.
I guess I was just looking for some off the wall suggestion that dropped me in my tracks. There must be something.

So, in short you're looking for that "Killer App". So, folks, what is it? http://www.mpz.co.uk/cwm/otn/funny/fruit.gif
Nothing springs to my mind ... but I'm a hardware woman!!! http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/funny/dark1.gif

I'm a book freak, I'd spend it all on books!
Ok, I'd buy Flash5 though. http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I had a grand and bought the whole Macromedia StudioMX=I got it mainly for the Flash Program but the whole package is great. Just starting to get the hang of Flash but you can see what an old fart of 64 years can learn in just a little while=

Wow - I had to do a huge double take on this one. It was so ... deja vu. Then I checked the date and remembered.
I posted this when I was leaving the Charlottes and had $1000 in my pro-d fund that was unspent. In some sort of heroic gesture I tried to donate it to the school. I tried to set up some program training. Then I thought about just buying software. Between me dragging my feet and a hysterically complete lack of interest from both administration and teaching staff I never got around to spending the money, so it was rolled back into the pro-d fund for some other teacher to use.
And, yes, I have made the migration to XP ... and I'me glad that I did.
Thanks for all your suggestions.

if you're still taking ideas consider buying some nice typefaces. here are a few places to shop, and a few classic typeface choices (with some font names too):
http://fontshop.com/
http://www.adobe.com/type/
http://www.fontexplorer.com/
Scala family (fontshop)
Frutiger family
Garamond family (Adobe Garamond)
Bodoni (I like BE, HTF Didot is very nice)
Jenson (I like Adobe's version, Centaur is nice)
Clarendon
a gothic face (Bell Gothic, News Gothic, Trade Gothic)
a script (Poetica)
a blackletter (Fette Fraktur, Goudy Text, etc)
