Adobe rockets 3-D into the Atmosphere

Adobe Systems on Monday announced new software and tools to help create three-dimensional Web sites.

Adobe Atmosphere, now available as a public beta, is a tool for authoring Web sites and for viewing and experiencing 3-D "worlds." The product works in conjunction with some existing 3-D tools on the market, and the Adobe Atmosphere browser incorporates the Viewpoint Media Player.

Atmosphere allows developers to aggregate objects, images and sound. A plug-in is required to use Atmosphere with Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.

"Adobe feels the Web experience is no longer going to be limited to 2-D page viewing," said Asako Yoshimura, senior product manager for Atmosphere, in San Jose, Calif. "It's going to be a lot more interactive and 'immersive.'"

Yoshimura said the software was designed to load quickly and leverage existing Web standards, such as JavaScript to program objects, special effects or animation. Users can import other file formats, including JPEG, GIF and PNG. Also included are pre-made objects, like staircases and walls, that developers can snap together.

Atmosphere uses the same user interface found in other Adobe products and can integrate with other Adobe tools.

End users need to download the free Atmosphere browser from Adobe in order to view the content.

The public beta, currently available only for Windows, is located here (http://www.adobe.com/products/atmosphere/main.html). Commercial versions supporting both Windows and the Macintosh are expected to be available this summer. Pricing has not yet been determined.
