Hi Sir,
I have disabled both NortonAntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall and downloaded ZoneAlarm. Both the Norton products were intertwined in one app that was running in my system tray. I have split them up and have only Norton Anti Virus running along with Zone Alarm. I also D/L ZoneLog Analyzer. I am not tooooooo sure as to what programs I should give server access to. I am a greenie when it comes to security. I don't know what it means when I give permission to a program to connect to the "local network". I am OK with connecting to the Internet.
Thanks for your input and I really appreciate the time you are taking to help out this "old broad".
I almost forgot. I am running the client version of SETI@home and I don't know whether SETI will be able to access my machine when it comes time to transmit the data I have been analyzing and give me a new work unit.

Hi Barb,

The only programs that need server rights are the ones that you KNOW will have 2 way communications like Web Servers, FTP servers, etc. By default, ZA will block programs from having server rights for security reasons. 98% of your programs will NOT need server rights to run properly.

I'm not sure about SETI because I've never used it. Maybe somebody else will know if SETI needs server rights or not. You might have to allow it server rights if it does what you explained.

Here's what I would do, when you get prompted to allow a program access to the internet, stop and think about if the program NEEDS access to the internet. Of course, IE, Outlook, OE will always need access to the internet, so go ahead and put the checkmark in the box where it says "always allow this program..". But, programs like Microsoft Word will not always need access, so don't put the checkmark in. That way it asks you everytime, so YOU'RE in control of what tries to send info out.

If in doubt, just click NO and see if the program works properly. http://www.helpfromtechs.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I hope I answered your questions. It's hard to set up your computer without knowing every program you have.
